Despite all the reports of record high temperatures this winter, East Idaho seems to be experiencing nearly normal snow levels. With the upcoming months of February and March being important months for snow, it’s very good news for the upcoming fishing season. The Henry’s Fork basin is 88 percent, and the headwaters of the Snake River, just above Palisades Reservoir is at 90 percent.

As you may or may not know, the fishing in September is usually very good on all rivers throughout East Idaho; including the Henry’s Fork, South Fork, and Teton Rivers. This season was a little bit late, due to the amount of snow and rain we got this winter and spring. We are expecting the fishing to continue to be amazing until late October. September in October!

Water flows at Irwin are at 13,600. There is dry fly fishing in the soft spots and on the gravel banks. The water is pretty dirty but as it clears fishing should explode! The best technique would be a Golden Stone with a nymph below, a Yellow Sally, or a streamer. Fish on!

Green & Grey Drakes are out in full force on the Henry’s Fork! The water has dropped and the weather is perfect. Also watch out for golden stones, caddis, and pmd’s.

The South Fork is running just about 23,000 cfs. Pallisades is already at 90%, it should be full in a few days. Hopefully it will not go over 23k. There have been people having some success on nymphs & we’ve been seeing some salmon flies & golden stones down below Lorenzo. No dry fly action yet.

Try big dry-flies close to the banks, a variety of small mayfly nymphs. Drakes are popping out sporadically…

We’ve still been receiving a lot of snow in the mountains of eastern Idaho.  I’ve had about 15″ in the last 8 days with a little falling every day.  Reservoirs should be at full capacity after runoff and stream flows should be good all summer.  Looking forward to a good year.  Starting this year Idaho changed the regulations so most rivers are now open to fishing all winter on a catch-and-release basis.  But it’s still kind of tough to get to the river in Island Park.  I took these photos of my yard on March 19, 2011 and thought if might be fun to show you what it’s like here in spring.  Between the orange and white poles stuck in the snow my Honda Element is parked.  I’ve shoveled it quite a few times but haven’t seen it for months.  In the second photo you can see the front left corner of my camp trailer peeking out of the snow.
