Optional South Fork Overnight and Day Trips
Glowing reports from the South Fork of the Snake River highlighted last season. This big river turns on from late July through early October, when some of the West's trout streams turn off due to the summer doldrums. The South Fork complements the Henry's Fork, Teton, and Madison rivers - sections of which can also be productive during the second half of the season. The South Fork yields hefty cutthroats, browns, and a few rainbows. Casting to the river's edge from drift boats is high drama in a breathtaking setting; this river courses through a thickly forested canyon inhabited by nesting bald and golden eagles.
Day trips to the South Fork are available, but driving distance (1 hour 15 minutes one way) makes an optional overnight at an outpost camp sensible. Last year, Three Rivers' outpost camp on the South Fork was very popular. So popular, in fact, that this year guests must give advance notice if they want to go, and the camp will be limited to a maximum of eight anglers (minimum four). The camp is established in advance of the fishing party, and the camp staff prepares hearty campfire dishes including delicious Dutch oven meals.
